Overview[edit | edit source]

The Ojin-Kai is a mercenary clan and one of the known Factionless. The clan commands numerous legions of trained soldiers and owns advanced weaponry and firepower. Their true allegiance (or for that matter their contractor) remains unknown. The first and only encounter with this clan to this day has been on the Union controlled planet Morn.

Encounter on Morn[edit | edit source]

During a trade visit to Morn, a representative of the Tonocom Defence corporation – Lucille Whitlock – noticed that the fusion generator on the planet was a military-grade model owned and developed by Tonocom Defence which was not documented in the corporation’s books. After failed negotiations with the inhabitants of Morn to pay compensational fees for the generator, Tonocom Defence sent a fleet to reclaim it which resulted in a skirmish between the two parties. The matter was then escalated to the Universal Council which unanimously decided that Morn must return the technology in question. The forces sent to reclaim the technology uncovered that the planet was run by the Ojin-Kai. After a short but costly battle the Ojin-Kai on Morn were defeated. Following the battle uncovered communication logs of the Ojin-Kai revealed that they have been provided with the generator and weaponry by colluders inside of Tonocom Defence. The clan used their military influence on Morn to stay hidden, raid passing transport ships, and conduct covert Quantum trades.

Encounter between Lucille Whitlock and Emmet[edit | edit source]

A conversation between Lucille Whitlock and Emmet - a representative of the Faceless - provided additional information about the Ojin-Kai:

Emmet: “You did an excellent job wiping out the Ojin-Kai, though. Good excuse for a raid.”
Lucille: “Thanks. If you’re not going to kill me, can you at least let me die in peace?”
Emmet: “Even if they’re still out there?”
Lucille: “The Ojin-Kai? You’re lying.”
Emmet: “Am I?”
Lucille: “The Vox would’ve-”
Emmet: “-The Vox can’t do anything about this. It’s majority rule here, and Mercer has more than enough planets in his pocket. He’s played this very well.”
Lucille: “And you Union folk call that governance?”
Emmet: “I’m not Union. And no, I don’t call that governance. But Mercer doesn’t care what happens with the Council, and the Vox can’t risk fracturing the Union. It’s a delicate balance that they can’t upset.”

This conversation implies that the Ojin-Kai might not have been defeated entirely and that (Cillian) Mercer, a respected member of the Vox, at least knew of their existence but tolerated them somehow.
