Introduction

The Federation welcomes you! As an Explorer, you could not have chosen better; our faction is built on the backs of those that braved the vast wilderness of space, building trade routes and infrastructure that still stand today, long after the destruction of the Sol system.

The Federation is a society built on the principles of freedom and technological prosperity. It is a democratic system with three Presidents presiding over its population. The Federation looks to construct a world of individual freedom, success and accomplishment for its citizens.

Within the Federation you always have a voice, thanks in large part to the Nexus: an ancient artifact that predates humanity. From within the Howitzer - our central station of government - the Nexus transmits data to the three sectors of Federation space at near instant speeds. Besides our central government, each sector is presided over by a President, who stands as the pinnacle of what a liberated individual can accomplish.

Though the Federation’s technological prowess is second-to-none, it requires proper oversight to be used effectively. Balancing power and structure is a hard task, and galactic Corporations such as VasTech help provide that balance for the benefit of our citizens. All this is done to create a stable system within which you can exercise your individual freedom, while the Federation works to protect our borders in the face of anarchy and violence.

We must remain ever vigilant if we are to keep the banner of liberty flying in this vast and dangerous galaxy.

The Federation

First of all, let’s take a look at the faction that is known for being the oldest spacefaring faction that is still in existence, the Federation. Where many of the groups or factions that first took to space slowly ceased to exist or lacked the ability to maintain political importance, the Federation has prospered from the moment humanity took to the stars. They established the first and greatest Martian colony, and for a while, even had a monopoly on space and all it had to offer. Flash forward to centuries later where their success still lingers. It has manifested itself in their rich commerce, well-established trade routes rooted in the principles of individual merit and entrepreneurship. The Federation finds its home on a trifecta of planets, connected by an enormous space station. This station also serves as the economic and diplomatic hub of the Federation.

Each of the Federation’s planets is ruled by a democratically elected president. These presidents work together to ensure every citizen of the Federation is free to profit off their prospering economy and encourage innovation and the advancement of technology. Indeed, there are close to no limits to the personal freedoms of people of the Federation . Decisions are made democratically through mutual self-interest and a stable and well-established political and governance structure. To preserve its positioning, The Federation has created institutions to support human capital development and empower members to reach their fullest potential.

However, there will always be trouble in what seems to be paradise — the Federation is regularly criticized by the other factions. It is accused of callousness and indifference toward its poorest citizens, lacking in ethical and moral virtues due to its excessive consumer culture as well as outright corruption. To the Empire, the Federation is viewed as fairly hedonistic and lacking honor amongst many other criticisms. To the Union, the Federation is viewed as fiercely unequal and conceited.

Federation Artifact: The Nexus

Well-protected inside of the Federation’s massive main space station rests the Nexus. It is capable of instant information transfer across most of colonized space, and possibly beyond. Described as “the most powerful communication device ever employed,” it is the lifeblood of the Federation’s superior and vast high-speed trade network. It has also helped keep the fragile faction alliance intact with limited Universal Council use. By contrast, the other factions are slowed by sub-optimal non-Nexus exchange networks. For example, while Federation ships are executing their orders, Empire ships would be just receiving their orders and only to the first few ships, not fleet-wide. Thus, in conflict-associated affairs, though not the strongest militarily by number, the Federation can respond with its entire fleet in unparalleled coordinated strategic maneuvering and speed of response.

Economically, any Federation corporation, or individual wealthy enough to do so, may request instant orders, inventories of supplies, and send all kinds of communications instantly and securely. The key to this security is the speed of data transmission and the Federation science that harnesses the alien technology. Encryption is a human construct that does not apply to the Nexus. Thus, if data is sent through another faction’s space, it is possible to intercept it without the Federation science, but at great cost. There exist daring souls, known only as Nexus Divers, who throw themselves into this maelstrom of information, searching for rare data scraps to sell to the highest bidder at the risk of severe strain and long-term damage to their mental faculties.

Scientists have tried for as long as can be remembered to reverse-engineer the mysteries of this instantaneous information transfer, but to no avail. To date, there exists no way to duplicate the sheer bandwidth, reach, and speed of the Nexus. For certain, it is a double-edged sword of sorts for the Federation, for it does provide a heretofore unimagined scope of economic expansion, but with no equivalent alternative to fall back on, its destruction would set the Federation back centuries and place it in a dangerously vulnerable position compared to the other factions.
